Diamond

The stone at the heart of the wheel

Birthstone
April
Hardness
Mohs 10
Colour
neutral

Diamond is crystallised carbon, formed a hundred miles beneath the surface under heat and pressure no other gem endures, and carried up in ancient volcanic pipes. It is the hardest natural material known, a perfect 10 on the Mohs scale, which is why a diamond's polish holds its fire for generations of daily wear.

Diamond, the story

The name comes from the Greek adamas, the unconquerable, and for most of history that is exactly what it was: a stone that could be cut by nothing but itself. What we call a diamond's life, its brightness, its fire, its scintillation, is really the work of the cutter, hundreds of years of learning how to fold light inside a colourless crystal and send it back to the eye.

At LM Gems the diamond sits at the centre of the wheel because it sits at the centre of the craft: the old mine cuts Laura seeks out carry the hand of their first cutter, and every bespoke piece begins the way a diamond does, with the choice of a shape.

April's birthstone, and the traditional stone of promise: clarity, endurance, and a love meant to outlast everything around it.
